Comic Book to Film

Comic books in Japan (better known as manga) have become really popular for most, if not all, generations and demographics in Japan. It ranges in genres from romance, comedy, horror, and drama and also pinpoints on specific target audiences for boys, girls, young adults, and older audiences. Most manga series develop into anime series that help market the manga series to gain popularity. That wasn't exactly the case for Yuki Midorikawa's manga series, Into the Forest of Fireflies' Light (Hotarubi no Mori e).

"Hotarubi no Mori e" is a short animated film of only 45 minutes. It tells the story of Hotaru, a young girl who gets lost in the forest of spirits, where she meets Gin, a mysterious, yet kind hearted spirit who dons a fox mask. Although it's short, it takes the viewer on a journey from Hotaru's childhood to adulthood as her relationship with Gin grows and develops. The story is heartwarming, comedic, with just the right amount of drama to make viewers cry.

The animation studio, Brain's Base, developed this anime film based on Midorikawa's series (she also published a very popular series, Natsume's Book of Friends). I watched this film a few days ago and could not stop crying at the end. Below is the full length movie from start to finish. I highly recommend giving it a look if you are interested.
